Our Legacy: 365 Days Later
It’s still surreal at times. It still feels like a dream, what happened here.
But it certainly happened. We made a difference. We stood up for something. And most importantly we did not settle. Above all we didn’t settle for okay. America is the greatest country in the world. We settle for excellence. We settle for true equality for all of our citizens. Equality in education, life, and the pursuit of our dreams.
It wasn't perfect, but what movement ever is. Even the ones remembered kindly by history had their in-the-moment whiffs. And ours was no different. Mistakes were made, missteps happened. But throughout it all, the ends surmounted those insignificant things. Because no matter what anyone ever says, we know the truth.
This was never about the media.
It was never about Melissa Click.
It was never about muscle.
It was never about politics.
It was never about football.
It was never about one man.
It was, is, and always will be about change.
And change is slow. And it’s certainly not easy. And I understand that. I love Mizzou more now, than I ever have. I cherish it more. I understand how special it is, no matter it’s faults.
We’ve got some long days behind us, and many more ahead. We’ve got some hard conversations, some difficult trails, and a few missteps. But it’ll all be worth it. It'll be worth it when this place is better than we found it, when our children ask us what we did in this civil rights movement. It’ll be worth it when history remembers us kindly.
Because it will.
I promise you, it will.
Still Going,
